The whole trip we divided in three parts according to three boats you have to take.

Coca (San Francisco de Orellana) => Rocafuerte

In Coca you'd better spend one day preparing for the trip. You can read about Bimbino and Bambina's preparations here.

First, you have to find a boat to Nuevo Rocafuerte. There were two companies offering this route.

We have just moved to our own homepage. If you want to read the full story, please continue at:

  2. Let's calculate roughly:
    Hammock $12
    Rope $5
    Mosquito repellent $5
    Water $5
    Iquitos - Pantoja $30
    Over the border $10
    Rocafuerte - Coca $15
    Total of $82.
Those are the most important things.
We made this trip a year ago, so add 10% to the prices, they might have gone higher.
If you don't have a tent, you'll need money for a place to stay in Pantoja and in Rocafuerte. $2-$8 per night.
Then you definitely need food. Otherwise you gonna suffer from hunger. The food included into the trip is a joke on that boat. It is relatively cheap to buy food on the market in Iquitos. There is hardly anything to buy in Pantoja and Rocafuerte, and the prices are very high.
Read about all the parts of the trip (links at the end of this post), they'll give you better insights, all in detail, including some prices.
So my advice is to plan more than $100 if to include all the extras like food, sunscreen, alcohol, overnights. But with $100 you definitely cover the transportation costs (Hammock is a part of transport, as without it is not possible to take a boat).
Plan extra $60 on top. You might get through without it, you might also need it in case of emergency.
Also, it depends on your needs and the way you are used to travel. You might get alone with 100 bucks, if you don't need any comfort in your trip. For me personally $100 budget for this trip would be too extreme.
And the biggest difference (except for direction) in going from Iquitos to Coca is in time needed. Up the river it might take up to 10 days only to Pantoja. Other things should be the same.
